Even in that case, here in Dar es Salaam water is often just a phone call away. You see a lot of big blue water trucks driving around which fill up the tanks that most people have at their house. On the country side however obtaining water is a completely different story….

Keeping these things in mind it might not very surprising that the enrolment rates of Tanzanian primary schools are quite low (often around 60 %). Luckily, WFP has a school feeding program which provides two school meals per day to every student.

Besides reducing hunger temporarily by providing food for the work performed, it should also be so that the projects reduce hunger and malnutrition in a more structural way. So, after deciding what regions will be targeted, WFP cooperates with the local authorities and partners to find out what the most pressing problems are. This simply means going to the villages to meet with the village heads and asking them what the largest problem in their community is. As you might expect we’re not talking about dog-poop on sidewalks or groups of youngsters spraying graffiti.

Sunday October 31st the presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Tanzania. President Jakaya Kikwete of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) or ‘Revolutionary party’ ran for his second five year term. His biggest contender and former CCM member was Willibrord Slaa the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema).
