Walk the World 2009

The Walk the World event is organised by TNT, and two other global private sector partners of WFP; Unilever and DSM. “Walk the World comes at a time of unprecedented challenge for the hungry and poor,” Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP, said. “Children are suffering because food prices are still high in many developing countries, and the global financial crisis is now hitting family incomes hard.”

WFP’s Executive Director Josette Sheeran and Peter Bakker co-hosted the dinner for about 80 government leaders and CEOs. The anniversary of the dinner was highlighted with the attendance of former Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Kofi Annan, who in his speech challenged the dinner guests to fund sustainable solutions faced by the world’s hungry poor. In the current economic crisis billions are being found to help the financial sector, he noted.

Enjoying Miami: a LET training to remember.

Fay came over the Caribbean and Haiti in the weekend and from Monday on she brought a lot of water and wind to Miami. This is an unexpected factor adding to our ER training... Locals believe this is only a baby-storm, however the hotel advises us not to go outside and keep air conditioning on 'very cold' to ensure the rooms are cold when the envisioned power outrage strikes. In the mean time they literally put sandbags in front of the door, to prevent water from coming in. Wind speeds are up to 60 miles an hour, with 8 inches of rain.

Together, we raised over US$1 million for the WFP which will be used to provide thousands of hungry children with school meals which will encourage them to attend school. Relentless hikes in food prices – a ‘silent tsunami’ which affect millions of the poor and hungry – in addition to the recent natural disasters in Myanmar and China made this year’s Walk more important than ever.
