
Recently, two TNT China drivers set-off from the Shanghai Pudong depot for a 70-kilometre trip to pick-up and deliver customer goods. But this trip was unlike any other: their vehicles consumed no fuel, released zero CO2 emissions, accelerated efficiently and made little noise.
The drivers were the first to operate the latest additions to the TNT China delivery fleet:
two zero-emission “pure electric” vehicles.
17 May 2010 - In the last four weeks, TNT participated in a number of tests with aerodynamic SideWings which help reduce noise, CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption of trucks. These tests reiterate TNT's commitment to PART20, a platform which develops aerodynamic devices by combining the know-how of scientists from the Technical University of Delft with the practical experience from partners in the transportation industry.
Employees at TNT Express China have demonstrated the power of personal engagement.
About 1,500 employees took part recently in a unique engagement campaign to stimulate a reduction of CO2 emissions at home. The badge redemption campaign, called “Me in Family”, encouraged employees and their family members to ‘green’ their day-to-day lives by adopting 10 environmentally positive behaviours.
TNT is aiming to drastically reduce CO2 emissions with its environmental programme, called Planet Me. By 2020, its target is to improve the company’s CO2 efficiency by 45% compared to 2007.
While working in the Social Responsibility department, Carin ten Hage was asked to head up Planet Me and she was immediately sold on the idea.
Today, TNT announced, for the first time, its CO2 efficiency objective during a press conference, hosted by CEO Peter Bakker and CFO Henk van Dalen.
The ambitious objective is a 45% improvement in CO2 efficiency by 2020, compared to 2007 levels. TNT sees the objective as a commitment to action – one that establishes its company-wide ambition level and underscores its commitment to environmental efficiency.
The World Economic Forum’s Logistics & Transport Industry Group has agreed standard guidelines for calculating consignment-level carbon emissions from logistics and shipping operations.
The Guidelines for Consignment-level Carbon Reporting will help consumers and businesses assess the carbon impact of transporting products and drive carbon efficiency in the freight and logistics sector.

Over thirty Dutch businesses have banded together in a bid to lobby government for environmental changes.
The objective of the group, called De Groene Zaak (The Green Cause), is to accelerate the realisation of a sustainable Dutch economy by putting pressure on Dutch politicians to remove existing regulatory and legal obstacles.

Eco-Log helps reduce vehicle fleet running costs by providing highly accurate data on fuel consumption and wastage.
The deal ensures that all of TNT’s global business units can purchase Lysanda’s Eco-Log product at an agreed price and terms.
SAM and SPG, two leading sustainable investment companies, announced today that they are granting their Sustainability Leader Award to Peter Bakker and their Sustainability Pioneer Award to Ashok Gadgil, a scholar at Berkeley.
The jury commended Bakker's 'innovative corporate citizenship' and TNT's 'integral approach towards sustainability' which encompasses the long-term partnership with the WFP, the Planet Me programme and the linking of manager compensation to non-financial goals.
TNT Express France has started using tricycles to deliver light parcels in the centre of Paris. The carbon-free service will initially cover the 3rd arrondissement of the capital before extending to the entire city heart by June 2010. The initiative is conducted in cooperation with Green Logistics / Becycle, a new company specialising in ecological transportation.
