The achievement of the first Millennium Development Goal to halve the number of hungry people by 2015 is more remote than ever. This is largely due to the high food prices, which rose 52 percent between 2007 and 2008. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stated last month that these high prices plunged an additional 75 million below the hunger threshold, bringing the estimated number of hungry people worldwide to 923 million, whereas the UN even mentioned that “(…) higher food prices may push 100 million people deeper into poverty”.

Send a Shipment - Make a Difference

Part of the objective of the campaign is to raise awareness amongst customers about the support TNT gives to the World Food Programme and to raise money for WFP’s School Feeding programme. TNT will donate €2 to WFP for every shipment that is send using 12:00 Express and 12:00 Economy Express between now and January 31st 2009.

This means that the shipments will really make a difference. Since it takes just 20 Euro cents a day for WFP to give one child a regular school meal, one consignment can keep a child nourished for several days.

This meeting was held last week and all pilot organizations participated. But not only were the humanitarians there. The Operations Manager from TNT Kenya, Andrew Nyale, participated as he could give information and background how TNT is handling Fleet Safety. Also the Regional Sales Manager from Toyota East Africa was present and he was of great value to the organizations as Toyota can provide the organizations with data regarding maintenance schedules (when do you need to schedule maintenance of a car but also an indication on the life span of parts).

Flood waters swept through the state after bursting through a dam on the Kosi River in neighbouring Nepal. With vast swathes of Bihar still under water, a litany of accusations has emerged of incompetence and neglect. More than two million people have been displaced from their homes. Hundreds of thousands of people are living in grim conditions in temporary camps, while even larger numbers have moved in with friends and relatives or have migrated to other parts of the country.

Enjoying Miami: a LET training to remember

28 August 2008

Fay came over the Caribbean and Haiti in the weekend and from Monday on she brought a lot of water and wind to Miami. This is an unexpected factor adding to our ER training... Locals believe this is only a baby-storm, however the hotel advises us not to go outside and keep air conditioning on 'very cold' to ensure the rooms are cold when the envisioned power outrage strikes. In the mean time they literally put sandbags in front of the door, to prevent water from coming in. Wind speeds are up to 60 miles an hour, with 8 inches of rain.
