Emergency Response

TNT's Emergency Response Team (ERT) was created after the realisation that logistics support is of great importance when it comes to providing assistance during major disasters like earthquakes, floods and the 2005 tsunami in Bandar Aceh, Indonesia.

Visit from boss WFP and president Philippines

23 October 2009
Peter Cermak
Thrilled by this opportunity, and once again, not really sure what to expect, we organised our own driver and met up with the WFP collegues. When J. Sheeran, who is very friendly and approachable lady, saw us with our TNT shirts she directly walked over and thanked us for TNT’s contributions and efforts in this difficult mission. I was not really sure what to say at that moment, but it showed me once more that WFP is really thankful and appreciates the support and dedication of TNT.

Delivering biscuits in a helicopter

After a short briefing we took off. Again, I was caught somewhere between feeling thrilled and extremely excited and at the same time kind of shaken by the thought of flying in a chopper to a remote jungle village while yet another typhoon was on its way. This was soon forgotten and I fully enjoyed the sensation of flying and I kept thinking that this is an amazing experience and that I am lucky to work for such a cool company.

Life in Manila

21 October 2009
Peter Cermak
In reality, it seems that in the centre of Manila life has more or less regained its normal flow. You wouldn’t say that only a couple of days ago, parts of the city were more than 3 meters under water. The streets are bustling with people, traffic is crazy and families are spending their Sundays in the park.

Moving 100 tons of biscuits to Manila

21 October 2009
Peter Cermak
The plan was to transport 116 metric tons of High Energy Biscuits (HEBs) - nutritious vitamin and mineral enriched biscuits - to the Philippines. However, because of the planned route and the alternative safety airport that was chosen, we were only able to load 101 metric tons in order not to breach the minimum fuel requirements. As everybody was pointedly aware of how essential these HEBs were for the Philippines and the relief effort of WFP, the pilots were committed to load as many biscuits as possible.

Final Call

I have just arrived at London Heathrow Airport after leaving Padang almost 30 hrs ago. Another 4 hours to go before I arrive at Schiphol. Plenty of time to give you my final thoughts. If I do not fall a sleep…

Girlpower

As usual we buy some bottles of water on our way to the media center and I start working on writing and editing my material. At 10 am we gather at the WFP office in Jakarta. Today we join another food distribution in a village in Pariaman, 2 hours from Padang. We are going to deliver 1300 boxes for 2000 beneficiaries. Again children and women. On my way over here I read an article about a recent report on increasing world hunger. This report stated a direct correlation between the education of women, their active role in political and economical life and the percentage of hungry people.

Smiles

I am on my way with Eby, who works for WFP, to one of the villages where the biscuits are going to be distributed. Tomorrow Eby will show me a map that indicates which areas have also been provided with food by WFP. I will try to upload some photos for you to see how the landscape looks over there. Just so you can see for yourself. The window is open and the wind blows some fresh air in my face. I feel energized already. It is so hot. I almost see the same view that I had when arriving in Padang: totally destroyed houses and houses which have survived.

When we drive from the airport to the city of Padang, you see the landscape changing...more and more houses are damaged, demolished or - worse - totally gone.
